“Medicine really has changed. 18 years ago after two children I had my first varicose vein operation which was when they stripped one’s veins out and it was much more uncomfortable.

I have hated my legs for as long as I can remember and I was always so conscious of them. I love my sport – running, gym, tennis, golf and am very active but have always covered my legs up with long trousers in the summer or long exercise kit and sadly I have never worn shorts. I had large bulging veins sticking out on my calves and lots of spider/thread veins making them appear very unsightly. In the summer with the heat they really expanded and hurt and so at the end of the day I would always have to put my legs up and rest them. After the summer of 2011 I decided I must do something about the veins and was recommended, Michael Gaunt.

In September I saw Mr. Gaunt for an initial consultation when he used an ultrasound scan to see exactly where the trouble was. He persuaded me there and then to book in and get them operated on. He also said that if I got them done in the winter months and then by the following summer I would be in shorts and never look back.

Mr Gaunt confirmed that I would need a general anaesthetic and have bilateral long and saphenous EVLA and multiple avulsions. I would be a day case and then afterwards I would need some follow up injections to remove the spider veins., I went ahead and booked! I think the thing that worried me was that I thought I would be “out of action” for several weeks – but this was not the case and the very next day I was walking my dogs a good 40 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon. I also had no pain and never needed to take a pain killer.

I was in the theatre for 1½ hours and I can honestly say that when I came round back in my room I was having a cup of tea and eating smoked salmon sandwiches straightaway! I was then discharged an hour later and went home.

I was tightly bandaged up for two days and then I took off the bandages and wore the support tights for two weeks. My legs became very bruised and the best piece of advice is to buy an ESY-AS applicator from Mr. Gaunt. It relieves any pressure on the bruising when putting on the stockings and speeds the whole process up!

I have now had my six week check up and can hardly notice any marks at all. I am about to go back for my injections – three weeks apart and now look forward to my new legs this summer. I already feel more confident and my friends keep teasing that at last they might see my legs!

Mr Gaunt is a very approachable and understanding person with whom I felt completely confident. He has a lovely team working alongside him which made me feel totally relaxed and at ease. I highly recommend Mr. Gaunt and the treatments he provides and would advise anyone to get on with it and not waste any more time deliberating as to whether or not to get their veins done! ”
