“I can't emphasise enough what a difference
the operation made”

I developed my varicose veins slowly over many years since my twenties, but had reached the point where every evening I was in pain from the deep aching in my right leg, and it was years since I had been happy to wear anything but trousers.

I was surprised that my GP needed to be persuaded of how much discomfort I was in, considering that the treatment would be done privately, but she did agree to refer me to Mr Gaunt and he confirmed, using ultrasound and examination, that I was a good candidate for laser treatment and removal of the smaller distorted veins over my calf area.

I had the procedure under local, which was perfectly manageable. It took about 40 minutes, and the anaesthetist distracted me for most of that time. Afterwards, I was in recovery for a short time, followed by an hour or so in my room. I had arrived at the hospital at 4pm and was on my way home around 8pm, heavily bandaged but in no pain at all. In fact, I took two paracetamol that night but needed nothing else at all following the procedure. I walked the children to school a day later, and although I was required to take four weeks away from my usual high impact gym routine, the operation really required no 'downtime' at all.

I can't emphasise enough what a difference the operation made. Although there is no guarantee of complete pain relief following the procedure, my aching never returned. No more tearful nights with my leg up on piles of cushions! There is a fair chance that I may develop a similar problem with my other leg in time, but I won't be waiting for years before I seek referral again. I only wish I had known how straightforward it would be to deal with.

With the varicosed veins resolved completely, I have gone on to have a series of small injections in the remaining spider veins on my leg, with the end result that there is no evidence at all of my (once embarrassingly visible) varicose veins. This summer I'll be running in shorts for the first time!
